The current work of the International Criminal Court (ICC) plays a key role in the pursuit of justice and accountability. After the U.N. Security Council referred the Darfur situation to the ICC in 2005, prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo opened a formal investigation into war crimes in Darfur. In 2007, the ICC issued its first two arrest warrants for suspects of crimes in Darfur.
On Wednesday March 4, 2009, the ICC judges issued an arrest warrant for General Omar al-Bashir, the Sudanese president.
