Escalating Violence In Post-Election Sudan

Since the April elections, the situation in Darfur has rapidly deteriorated with escalating violence, intensifying tribal clashes, obstruction of UNAMID and humanitarian operations, increased banditry, and shortages of critical resources. The region remains in crisis, and many tragic events go unreported, especially cases of violence against women. While this timeline may not include everything that happens on the ground, it illustrates the increasingly critical situation many Darfuri civilians are confronting. Check out our blog for more analysis and information on what is occurring in Darfur, and continue to check back here for updated information from the ground in Darfur.

Since the elections:

  • Five UNAMID peacekeepers have been killed and four have been abducted
  • Ten humanitarian aid workers and doctors have been abducted
  • At least 12 tribal clashes leading to over 320 deaths have been reported
  • 600 killed in Darfur in May alone
