WASHINGTON - A new analysis by the Carter Center on Sudan’s elections expresses grave concerns about the political and security environment throughout the country less than one month ahead of the country’s first multiparty elections in over 20 years. This analysis contradicts repeated assertions by the Sudanese government that the necessary conditions for free and fair elections currently exist in Sudan. The international community must respond to reports of continued insecurity in Darfur, a lack of basic political freedoms and suppression of the media – all of which shed clear light on the ruling National Congress Party’s intent to oversee a fraudulent electoral process designed to legitimize its undemocratic, repressive and genocidal rule.
“Holding elections in Darfur at this time continues to stretch the imagination of everyone who is not associated with the Sudanese government,” said Mark Lotwis, Acting President of the Save Darfur Coalition, who recently returned from Sudan. “The government’s refusal to lift a state of emergency, as encouraged by Sudanese opposition parties and The Carter Center, is in itself recognition that the conflict endures and normal political life has not returned to Darfur. The international community must immediately begin to ask where these fraudulent elections will leave the people of Darfur and all Sudanese.”
The Save Darfur Coalition urges the United States to act immediately to lead the international community in pressing the Sudanese government to create an environment for a real contestation of power and to reduce the risk of election-related violence and human rights violations. In addition, the coalition urges the Obama Administration to not legitimize the full results of this process without clear indications that they represent the true expression of the Sudanese people.
